Reverse description The upper portion of the reverse depicts a detailed panoramic view of a domed mosque with multiple minarets, identifiable as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) of Istanbul, rendered against a stylised landscape. Below this architectural vignette, five children dressed in traditional Turkish folk costumes perform a circle dance (halay), holding hands and stepping in unison. In the lower field, flanking the date '1979', appear two emblems: the United Nations logo on the left and the official International Year of the Child emblem on the right. The curved legend 'ULUSLARARASI COCUK YILI' arcs along the upper periphery.

Additional information

Issued to mark the International Year of the Child, a United Nations initiative that prompted dozens of commemorative programs worldwide in 1979. Turkey's contribution was a gold issue at a moment of acute domestic crisis — the country was in the grip of political violence, rampant inflation, and an IMF-supervised austerity program, conditions that would culminate in the military coup of September 1980. Collector-targeted from inception, circulation was never the point.
