| Reverse description | The upper portion of the reverse depicts a detailed panoramic view of a domed mosque with multiple minarets, identifiable as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) of Istanbul, rendered against a stylised landscape. Below this architectural vignette, five children dressed in traditional Turkish folk costumes perform a circle dance (halay), holding hands and stepping in unison. Issued to mark the International Year of the Child, a United Nations initiative that prompted dozens of commemorative programs worldwide in 1979. Turkey's contribution was a gold issue at a moment of acute domestic crisis — the country was in the grip of political violence, rampant inflation, and an IMF-supervised austerity program, conditions that would culminate in the military coup of September 1980. Collector-targeted from inception, circulation was never the point.
