The Banque de la République du Burundi introduced this high-denomination note during one of the country's most politically turbulent stretches — the 2015 constitutional crisis over Pierre Nkurunziza's contested third-term bid triggered mass protests, an attempted coup, and the flight of several hundred thousand refugees into neighboring countries. The economic dislocation that followed accelerated demand for larger-denomination notes as the franc came under sustained pressure.
The "Yellow" designation distinguishes it from earlier 10,000-franc issues in the series, a collector shorthand that has stuck.
