Chad's first independent banknote series, of which this is the highest denomination, emerged from the dissolution of the Afrique Équatoriale Française monetary union. The notes were printed by the Banque de France rather than a commercial security printer — an arrangement that kept former French Equatorial Africa territories financially tethered to Paris well into the independence decade.
The Panouillot and Gautier signature combination places this in the earliest issues of the series. Gautier served as a French treasury official whose counter-signature on newly independent African central bank notes was standard practice under the CFA franc zone agreements — a detail that says something about how much autonomy those agreements actually permitted.
