Eger Castle's most famous moment came in 1552, when a Hungarian garrison of roughly 2,000 — including women who famously hurled hot liquid on scaling troops — held off an Ottoman force estimated at 35,000 to 40,000 under Kara Ahmed Pasha. The siege's failure was one of the few significant Ottoman reverses of that campaign season, though the Turks returned in 1596 and took the castle with far less resistance.
This issue belongs to the Magyar Nemzeti Bank's ongoing Hungarian Castle series, which has systematically worked through the country's most historically significant fortifications since the early 2000s.
