The Budapest Zoo, founded in 1866, is the oldest in Hungary and among the oldest operating zoological gardens in the world. The 2016 issue falls within a long-running Magyar Nemzeti Bank commemorative program dedicated to Hungarian cultural and natural heritage institutions. Silver commemoratives in the 10,000 forint denomination have been issued with enough regularity since the 1990s that collectors treat the series as a type run rather than isolated pieces.
The Adamo EM323 reference places this squarely in the modern commemorative section of the Hungarian catalog, struck to proof or proof-like standard at the Magyar Pénzverő mint in Budapest.
