The 10,000 Escudo denomination was the highest value circulating note in Portugal for much of the late 1980s and into the 1990s, a period when inflation had steadily eroded the purchasing power of lower denominations. Banco de Portugal had issued a 5,000 Escudo note only a few years earlier, and the jump to 10,000 reflected the practical demands of daily commerce rather than any singular monetary event.
Pick 185 runs across a date range of 1989–1991, covering what collectors distinguish as the first print. Later printings show subtle differences in signature combinations, which remain the primary tool for sorting variants within this type.
