The 10,000 Escudo denomination was the highest value circulating note in Portugal for much of the late 1980s and into the 1990s, a period when inflation had steadily eroded the purchasing power of lower denominations. Banco de Portugal had issued a 5,000 Escudo note only a few years earlier, and the jump to 10,000 reflected the practical demands of daily commerce rather than any singular monetary event.
