Serbia reintroduced the dinar in 2003 after years of using the Deutsche Mark as a de facto currency following the economic collapse of the 1990s. This gold issue arrived just three years into that restoration, part of a broader effort by the National Bank to establish prestige collector coinage under the revived currency. Tesla was a natural choice — born in Smiljan in 1856 to Serbian parents, his image had appeared on Yugoslav federal banknotes decades earlier.

KM#45 was struck in a mintage small enough to make it genuinely scarce in secondary markets.
