Additional information

Bosnia and Herzegovina began issuing commemorative coinage in 1996 while the country was still emerging from the 1992–1995 war — the Dayton Agreement had been signed only months before this piece was struck. The hoopoe (*Upupa epops*) is native across the region, and the choice of wildlife subjects for early post-war issues reflects a deliberate move toward politically neutral imagery at a moment when almost any historical or cultural symbol carried ethnic freight.
