Vietnam's Year of the Snake issue was part of a lunar new year commemorative series the State Bank launched in the late 1990s, aimed squarely at the collector and gift market rather than circulation. The hologram application was added to this denomination to deter counterfeiting and to justify the premium pricing in export markets, particularly among overseas Vietnamese communities.
KM#59 is one of the scarcer entries in the series by surviving population — not because mintages were low by design, but because a significant portion were sold in presentation packaging that has since degraded, leaving the coins themselves with toning or surface contamination.
