The obverse engraving on this note was executed by Czesław Słania, the Polish-Swedish master engraver whose work for the Swedish postal service and numerous European security printers made him arguably the most technically accomplished intaglio engraver of the 20th century. His appearance in a Brazilian domestic print run — executed at Casa da Moeda do Brasil rather than a European security printer — is genuinely unusual and reflects the international freelance commissions he accepted throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
The 1984–1985 issue appeared during Brazil's severe inflationary crisis, a period when denominations escalated rapidly enough to render notes obsolete within a year of issue. The cruzeiro itself was replaced by the cruzado in February 1986.
