Argentina's inflation in 1989 was catastrophic — the annual rate peaked above 3,000 percent. The Austral, introduced in 1985 as a stabilization measure, was already failing badly by the time this provisional note was rushed into circulation. "Provisional" here is not a collector euphemism; the Banco Central was simply overprinting existing stock because new denominations could not be designed, approved, and printed fast enough to keep pace with the currency's collapse.
The Austral was replaced by the convertible Peso in 1992, with one new Peso equal to 10,000 Australes — precisely the face value of this note.
