The 10,000 Australes denomination only became necessary because the Austral itself was collapsing. Introduced in 1985 as a shock therapy measure — replacing the Peso Argentino at 1,000 to 1 — the Austral was meant to halt hyperinflation. It didn't. By the time this note entered circulation, monthly inflation was running above 100%, and the 10,000 denomination that would have seemed absurd at the currency's launch was simply inadequate. The Austral was retired in 1992, replaced by the convertible Peso at 10,000 Australes to 1.
