Issued at the peak of Weimar hyperinflation, this ten-billion-mark note is one of thousands of Notgeld emergency issues that German municipal and district authorities printed in 1923 when the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical currency to keep commerce moving. The Landkreis Bonn — the administrative district surrounding the city, distinct from the city itself — had legal authority to issue such instruments temporarily, though their acceptance was always technically local and time-limited.
The watermarked paper used by Rhenania-Druckerei was a modest security measure for a denomination that would be economically worthless within weeks of printing.
