Obverse description Letterpress note in dark olive-brown, enclosed within a scalloped guilloche inner border and sawtooth outer frame. The denomination "Zehn Milliarden Mark" is set in large Fraktur script across the upper central panel, beneath which a Gothic-type text block states the issuer's payment obligation, the place and date "Düsseldorf, den 25. September 1923", and the authority "Landesbank der Rheinprovinz – General-Direction"; two Rhenish provincial shield vignettes flank the lower text field. A manuscript signature appears above the serial number, a red rectangular overprint stamp is applied to the left margin, and the printer's imprint "Bachem, Köln" is set in small type at the foot.

Comments

The Landesbank der Rheinprovinz was not a central bank but a provincial public credit institution — its entry into emergency currency issuance during the hyperinflation of 1923 reflects how completely the Reichsbank had lost control of the money supply by that autumn. Notgeld at this denomination level was a daily operational necessity, not a collector exercise; ten billion marks would buy roughly a loaf of bread at the peak of the crisis in late 1923.

J. P. Bachem was a Cologne commercial printer and Catholic publishing house, better known for religious and legal texts than banknote production. The improvised nature of the source is visible in the typography.
