| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Pope Pius VI wearing a skullcap (zucchetto) and richly embroidered papal cope with ermine trim, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture typical of late 18th-century Italian medallic art. The truncation reveals the elaborately decorated vestment with a prominent pectoral cross. The circular Latin legend reads PIVS SEXTVS PONT MAX AN VIII, denoting Pius VI as Supreme Pontiff in his eighth regnal year. The legend is separated from the toothed border by a flat rim, with interpuncts dividing the words. |

| Reverse description | Central design features a domed rotunda or tempietto in Renaissance architectural style, shown in three-quarter perspective on a tiled stepped platform, with columns supporting the dome and an arched entrance visible between the pillars. To the lower left stands a small figure of a bearded ecclesiastic, and to the lower right a seated armored figure bearing a shield, likely personifications of the Church and Bologna respectively, commemorating Pope Pius VI's visit to the city. The mint name BONONIA and date 1782 appear in two lines in the lower field, while the circular legend ADVENTVS OPTIMI PRINCIPIS (The Arrival of the Best Prince) arcs around the upper periphery, separated by interpuncts, within a toothed border. |
