| Reverse description | The reverse features a three-quarter-length frontal figure of Christ in Majesty enclosed within a pointed oval mandorla (vesica piscis) ornamented with a beaded border and surrounded by a ring of sixteen six-pointed stars. Christ is shown nimbed and robed, raising His right hand in benediction while holding the Gospels in His left. The surrounding circular Latin legend, split across the field, reads SIT. T. XPE. DAT. Q. TVO. REGIS. ISTE. DVCA — the traditional Venetian invocation 'May this duchy be given to you, O Christ, whom our ruler governs.' The design continues the unbroken medieval iconographic tradition of the Venetian ducat, largely unchanged since its introduction in 1284. |
