| Obverse description | Obverse depicts two standing figures facing one another across a tall staff or banner: at left, Saint John the Baptist in robes, and at right, the kneeling Grand Master Juan de Homedes in the habit of the Order, receiving the standard. The composition closely follows the Venetian zecchino tradition, with the Grand Master's investiture rendered in a stylised hammered relief. The peripheral legend, interrupted by the central motif, reads · F · IOANNES · · OMEDES M I, identifying Fra Juan de Homedes as Grand Master. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with a beaded border, characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Hospitaller coinage. |
