Reverse description The ornate papal coat of arms of Benedict XIV, comprising a vertically striped shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, the symbols of pontifical sovereignty. The shield is elaborately framed by symmetrical acanthus-leaf scrollwork cartouche in high relief. A dove with spread wings, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, is depicted above the papal arms. The two-word legend DEDIT PIGNVS ("He gave a pledge") is divided to either side of the central design in Roman capitals. A fine denticulated border runs along the coin's outer edge.
