Obverse description Saint John the Baptist, nimbed and draped, standing facing left and extending his right hand in blessing toward the kneeling doge, while holding a tall processional banner staff in his left hand. To the right, the doge is depicted in profile kneeling in a posture of devotion, wearing his characteristic ducal robes and cap. The figures are rendered in high relief in the Gothic-influenced Italian style. The circular Latin legend surrounding the scene reads DVX ET GVB REIP GEN, identifying the issuing authority of the Republic of Genoa.
