Additional information

China's annual Arbor Day — observed every March 12th — was revived by state decree in 1979, directly tied to a national reforestation campaign responding to decades of deforestation accelerated during the Great Leap Forward. This coin was part of a short commemorative series the People's Bank issued through the late 1980s and into the 1990s to reinforce that campaign through circulating coinage. The nickel-clad steel composition was a deliberate cost-reduction from earlier aluminum issues as mintage volumes for themed 1 Yuan pieces increased.
