Additional information

China's bid to host the inaugural FIFA Women's World Cup succeeded in part because of the country's growing investment in women's football infrastructure during the late 1980s. The 1991 tournament, held across six Chinese cities, drew surprisingly strong crowds — the final in Guangzhou between the United States and Norway attracted over 63,000 spectators. This circulation-quality commemorative was issued to mark the occasion, an unusual choice given that most Chinese sports commemoratives of the period were struck in precious metals for collectors rather than in base metal for general use.
