Obverse description Central device comprises two conjoined footballs rendered in stylized relief, overlaid by an abstract artistic motif depicting a dynamic female figure in flight, evoking speed and athleticism. The circular legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The denomination 壹圆 appears in formal Chinese script at the base of the field. The overall composition employs a bold, modernist graphic style characteristic of Chinese commemorative coinage of the period.

Additional information

China hosted the first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991 — officially titled the FIFA World Championship for Women's Football for the M&M's Cup — held across Guangdong province in November of that year. The tournament was something of a trial run for FIFA, which had resisted a women's world championship for decades. Twelve nations participated, with the United States defeating Norway in the final. China's national team finished fifth, a respectable result that nonetheless disappointed a host nation that had hoped for more on home soil.
