Obverse description Gray-green note with green and pink underprint. A temple vignette occupies the left portion of the face, while a portrait of Confucius appears at right. The design is framed by a fine guilloche border with the bank title and denomination inscribed in Chinese characters.

Reverse description Dark green on pale ground. The central field carries a large numeral '1' flanked symmetrically by two ornate guilloche rosette panels each inscribed with the Chinese characters for 'One Yuan'. The bank title runs along the top in Chinese, with 'ONE YUAN' in a cartouche at the bottom centre, and the printer's imprint in small Chinese characters below. The entire design is enclosed within an elaborate interlocking geometric border.
