| Obverse description | The national emblem of the People's Republic of China occupies the upper central field, depicting Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars — one large star flanked by four smaller ones — encircled by a wreath of grain ears and a cogwheel at the base. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed horizontally across the lower field in Chinese characters. The date 1991 appears in the exergue below the legend. A fine beaded border rings the entire obverse. |

Issued to mark the 70th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party's founding in Shanghai in July 1921, this commemorative circulated alongside the standard 1 Yuan issue of the same year. The Party's first National Congress was held in a French Concession rowhouse on Xingye Road — a location that became politically inconvenient to acknowledge for decades given the irony of founding a revolutionary Marxist party on foreign-administered colonial soil.
