The Bank of West Shantung was a Japanese puppet institution established in occupied Shandong province during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its notes functioned as occupation currency, displacing the fabi issued by the Nationalist government and channeling local economic activity through Japanese-controlled financial infrastructure.
Year 29 corresponds to the 29th year of the Republic of China calendar — a dating convention the puppet authorities retained, though the irony of using Republican chronology on occupation paper was presumably lost on no one.
