Reverse description The reverse is printed in orange-red on fine guilloche work and carries a central vignette of the stone stairway ascending Mount Tai (Taishan) in Shantung, with sheer rocky cliffs on either side and a distant temple visible at the summit. BANK OF CHINA arches across the top within an ornate scrollwork border, while ONE and YUAN appear in large serif lettering to either side of the vignette, beneath the split legend PROMISES TO PAY THE BEARER / ON DEMAND AT ITS OFFICE HERE. The branch name SHANTUNG and date FEBRUARY 1934 are set below the central scene, with the printer's imprint at the foot.
