Obverse description The national emblem of the People's Republic of China occupies the upper central field, depicting Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars within a wreath of ears of grain encircling a cogwheel at the base. Below the emblem, a panoramic view of Tiananmen Square is rendered in low relief, flanked by monumental public buildings. Radiating lines and bursting fireworks fill the surrounding field, evoking a celebratory atmosphere. Three lines of Chinese legend appear in the lower field: the country name, the commemorative inscription marking the 35th founding anniversary, and the date range 1949–1984.

Five cranes in full flight are distributed dynamically across the upper field, symbolising longevity and prosperity. An industrial skyline appears in the lower left field, and the Great Wall is visible in low relief to the lower right, representing national progress and heritage. The denomination legend 壹圓 is inscribed in the left field in bold Chinese characters.
