The "Yeni" (New) prefix was added to Turkish currency in 2005 as part of a sweeping redenomination that dropped six zeros from the lira — a direct consequence of decades of chronic inflation that had rendered the old lira nearly worthless in practical terms. At its worst, the Turkish lira had fallen to roughly 1.65 million per US dollar. The Yeni Kuruş, a subdivision that had been functionally extinct for years, was reintroduced alongside it.
The "Yeni" designation was always meant to be temporary. By 2009, the prefix was officially dropped.
