Obverse description Central field features a boldly hand-engraved Imperial dragon rendered in vigorous, deeply incised strokes, coiling dynamically within a beaded inner circle; the dragon's head faces left with mouth open and scales finely delineated, reflecting the artistic mastery of engraver Kano Natsuo. Eight Chinese characters arranged around the periphery outside the beaded border read the reign title and denomination, separated by decorative star-shaped and dot ornaments. The legend 大日本 (Great Japan) appears on the left and 明治二年 (Meiji Year 2) on the right, with 一圓 (1 Yen) inscribed at the base. The overall composition is executed entirely by hand engraving without the use of mechanical reduction, giving the design a distinctly calligraphic and individualistic character. The rim is plain and undecorated.
