Obverse description A boldly rendered coiled dragon occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The dragon is depicted in high relief with finely detailed scales, claws, and flowing mane, rendered in the traditional Japanese artistic style. Six kanji characters are arranged in a circular legend outside the beaded border, reading 'Great Japan, Year 3 of Meiji.' The denomination 'One Yen' (一圓) is inscribed at the base of the design, flanking a small decorative dot on either side.
