Obverse description Light brown note with a central vignette of Takenouchi no Sukune at right, printed in letterpress. A four-character Chinese overprint runs across the centre of the note. The overall design is spare, with the underprint in a pale tonal ground consistent with Japanese military currency production of the period.

Reverse description Printed in orange-red on an unadorned paper ground, the reverse carries two large central Chinese characters 軍用 (military use) flanked to the right by the vertical inscription 手票 (hand note), with a guilloche oval cartouche at left incorporating the English legend ONE YEN in vertical disposition. A column of smaller Chinese text at the far right contains the exchange and anti-counterfeiting notice.
