Obverse description The state emblem of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) occupies the central field, centred on the round central hole. The emblem features a serrated cogwheel encircled by two rice sheaves bound at the base with a ribbon, symbolising industry and agriculture, with a five-pointed star surmounting the cogwheel. A stylised landscape with rice paddy fields appears on the ribbon at the base. The circular legend NƯỚC VIỆT NAM DÂN CHỦ CỘNG HÒA runs along the upper periphery in Latin script.

Additional information

The National Bank of Vietnam issued this coin in 1958, during the early years of the Republic of Vietnam — a state whose entire existence was underwritten by American financial and military support. The xu denominations of this period circulated heavily in the south while the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Hanoi was simultaneously building its own parallel monetary system, making these small aluminum pieces quiet markers of a country already split in two.
