The "Prague Upheavals" of June 1848 were distinct from the earlier nationalist congress held in the city that spring — these were street barricades, artillery bombardment, and the military suppression of Czech and radical German students by Windischgrätz's forces over five days. The uprising ended any hope of a negotiated Bohemian autonomy within the Habsburg framework for a generation. This commemorative was issued as part of the Czech National Bank's ongoing Xeros series, which uses bimetallic composition to distinguish the pieces from standard circulation coinage.
