Reverse description A bold Christ Order cross (Cruz de Cristo) occupies the center of the coin, its arms extending nearly to the inner beaded border. The four quadrants formed by the cross each contain one digit of the date, reading 1-6-8-3 (example year shown), arranged clockwise around the cross. The reverse is enclosed within a beaded inner circle and a reeded or rope outer border matching the obverse. The design is stark and uncluttered, typical of Portuguese colonial hammered silver coinage of the late seventeenth century.
