Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms is displayed centrally within a shield, featuring the traditional arrangement of five escutcheons in saltire charged with bezants, surrounded by a bordure of castles. The shield is flanked by the mint letters D and O, denoting the Dio (Diu) mint, placed to either side in the field. A circular legend surrounds the central device. The overall style is characteristic of hammered colonial coinage produced under Portuguese authority in India during the reign of King Pedro II.
