Obverse description Central field occupied by the Portuguese royal arms: a shield bearing five escutcheons in saltire, each charged with five bezants, the whole surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is framed by a decorative cartouche with scrollwork and flanked by castles in the bordure, rendered in the bold, somewhat naive relief characteristic of hammered colonial coinage. The entire design is enclosed within a milled or beaded outer border. The composition is symmetrically arranged and typical of Portuguese India issues of the Joannine period.

Reverse description A large Portuguese cross of the Order of Christ occupies the entire field, dividing it into four quarters. The date digits 1, 7, 4, and 0 are placed one in each quarter, reading clockwise from the upper left, serving as the sole inscription on this face. The cross is rendered in high relief with squared terminals, consistent with the hammered technique used at the Damão mint. The design is contained within a beaded or milled border, and the letter 'D' (mintmark for Damão) appears in one of the quarters or adjacent to the cross.
