Obverse description Central vignette within a circular frame presents an artist's rendition of the Portsmouth Iron Works set within an industrial riverside landscape. The numeral 5 appears in circular cartouches at left and right, flanking the central vignette. Decorative letterpress borders and scroll-work frame the entire composition, with the principal inscriptions arranged in banner form above and below the central design.

Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a central oval text panel containing the redemption terms, flanked by two scenic vignettes — a riverside industrial scene at left and a town or landscape view at right — each set within circular frames bearing the numeral 5. An ornate letterpress border with decorative corner pieces surrounds the entire composition, and a serial number is printed below the central text panel. The facsimile signatures of the General Chairman and Secretary appear at lower left and lower right respectively, with "ONE WOODEN NICKEL" in bold display lettering along the base.
