Obverse description The State coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicting Mount Paektu with a radiant red star above, framed by sheaves of rice tied with a ribbon at the base, and an industrial scene including a hydroelectric dam and mining tower in the lower portion. A circular Hangul legend reading the full name of the Central Bank of Korea runs along the upper periphery. The denomination '1 원' (1 Won) is inscribed at the bottom of the field, flanked by decorative scroll ornaments.

Reverse description A bust-length portrait of Yeon Gaesomun (603–666), the powerful military commander and regent of the Goguryeo kingdom, is depicted facing slightly left in three-quarter view. He is shown wearing an elaborate ornate military helmet with decorative finials and chainmail neck guard, with a beard and moustache rendered in fine relief. Hangul inscriptions in the field identify him as '연개소문' (Yeon Gaesomun) to the right, and '고구려의 애국 영웅' (Patriotic hero of Goguryeo) to the upper left, with '7세기중엽' (mid-7th century) at the lower left. The Juche year and Gregorian date '주체 92(2003)' appear in the exergue.
