Obverse description The national arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are depicted centrally, featuring the characteristic oval escutcheon with Mount Paektu, a hydroelectric dam, and a power transmission tower, all surmounted by a five-pointed star emitting rays. The arms are flanked by sheaves of rice bound with a ribbon in the national colours. The Korean-script legend reading 'CHOSUN MINJUJUUI INMIN KONGHWAGUK' (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) encircles the device along the upper periphery, while the denomination '1 WON' appears in the lower exergue within a decorative laurel wreath.

The vessel is shown underway on stylised waves, with seabirds in the foreground and a harbour cityscape with steeples and cranes visible in the background. The name 'HELENA SLOMAN' is inscribed in bold raised letters along the upper legend, and the year of issue '2003' appears in the lower exergue.

Additional information

The Helena Sloman was a Hamburg-built paddle steamer that completed the first German trans-Atlantic crossing in 1850, making the voyage from Hamburg to New York under the flag of the Sloman shipping line. North Korea's commemorative coinage program of the early 2000s cast a remarkably wide net for subjects — this issue belongs to a series honoring historic sailing and steam vessels that have no particular connection to Korean history, produced almost entirely for the international collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
