Obverse description The obverse features the national emblem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at centre, depicting Mount Paektu with a hydroelectric dam and rice paddies in the foreground, framed by sheaves of rice tied with a ribbon bearing the inscription of the state name in Korean, and surmounted by a five-pointed star emitting rays. Flanking the lower portion of the emblem are two olive branches extending toward the bottom of the coin. The denomination '1 원' (1 Won) appears prominently in the lower field beneath the emblem.
