Additional information

North Korea's commemorative aluminum series honoring Nobel laureates is an oddity of the Kim Jong-il era — a state with no free press and no independent intellectual life issuing coins celebrating the very prize it could never produce a citizen to win. Sully Prudhomme, awarded the first Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901, was himself a contested choice even at the time; Tolstoy was widely considered the more deserving candidate, and the Swedish Academy's decision drew immediate public criticism.
