Additional information

Issued to commemorate the June 2000 inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang — the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of North and South Korea since the peninsula's division in 1945. Kim Jong-il and Kim Dae-jung signed the June 15th Joint Declaration, raising genuine international hopes for reconciliation. Those hopes evaporated within a few years as nuclear tensions resurged.

The 1 Won denomination was chosen purely for symbolic weight; these pieces never entered circulation and were produced exclusively for the commemorative market, primarily targeting foreign collectors through state export channels.
