Obverse description The State Emblem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicting a hydroelectric dam and power plant set against radiating beams of light, surmounted by a five-pointed star, and flanked by sheaves of rice tied with a ribbon at the base. The Hangul legend 조선민주주의인민공화국 curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination '1 WON' in Latin script appears at the base, flanked on either side by a spray of laurel branches. The design is executed with fine relief detail against a flat, dark field, characteristic of proof-style striking.
