Obverse description Central field features the Hamburg city arms — a turreted triple-towered castle with an open gateway, rendered in bold relief within a beaded inner circle. The castle, a characteristic emblem of Hamburg coinage, displays three crenellated towers of varying height above a battlemented wall. The surrounding legend MONETA HAMBVRG is inscribed in uncial Gothic lettering between the inner beaded circle and the outer beaded border. The hammered flan exhibits the typical irregular roundness of medieval Low German silver coinage.
