Additional information

Frederick III von Saarwerden held the archbishopric of Cologne from 1370 until his death in 1414, a tenure defined by persistent conflict with the city of Cologne itself — the archbishop and the burghers fought repeatedly over jurisdictional and financial authority, with Frederick occasionally barred from residing within the city walls. The Weißpfennig, literally "white penny," takes its name from the whitened silver surface achieved by acid-washing the blanks before striking, a technique that gave Rhenish coins of this period their characteristic pale appearance despite often modest silver content.
