| Obverse description | Bare-headed left-facing effigy of Duke Leopold Friedrich of Anhalt-Dessau, rendered in high relief with finely detailed portrait work characteristic of mid-19th-century German state coinage. The truncation of the bust is clearly defined at the shoulder. A circular legend encircles the portrait along the rim, with the Berlin Mint mark 'A' appearing at the lower portion of the field beneath the bust. |

| Additional information |
Anhalt-Dessau was among the smallest of the German states participating in the Vereinsthaler system established by the Dresden Mint Convention of 1838 and reinforced by the Vienna Treaty of 1857 — the latter being the direct occasion for this coin's production. Leopold Frederick, who ruled Anhalt-Dessau from 1817 until his death in 1871, issued relatively few struck pieces across his long reign, making output from the Dessau court modest by any measure. The 1858 date places this squarely in the first year of compliance with the revised Vienna standard.
