Obverse description Crowned half-length effigy of James I facing right, richly attired in elaborately worked armour with a ruff visible at the collar and an ermine-lined mantle about his shoulders. The king holds an orb in his left hand and a sceptre in his right, both rendered in fine hammered relief. The crowned bust is set within a beaded inner circle, with the royal crown surmounted by fleurs-de-lis and crosses pattée. The peripheral Latin legend, separated by pellet stops, runs continuously around the circumference within the beaded border.
