| Obverse description | Central field displays the shield of St. George — a cross of St. George on a plain field — set within a wreath of laurel and palm branches tied at the base, symbolizing civic and military honor. The mintmark (sun or anchor, depending on emission) appears above the shield at the top of the wreath. The circular legend in Latin reads THE COMMONWEALTH OF ENGLAND, separated by pellets, running clockwise around the periphery. The coin is struck by the hammered method, giving the design a characteristic irregular relief typical of mid-17th century English gold coinage. No royal effigy appears, consistent with the republican iconography of the Interregnum period. |
