Obverse description A dolphin depicted swimming downward occupies the central field, rendered in archaic Italian style with characteristic bold relief. The abbreviated civic legend appears to the right of the principal device. The heavy cast fabric and irregular flan are typical of early Italian aes grave coinage from this region.

Three pellets arranged vertically to the left of the main device serve as value marks denoting the denomination of three unciae.
