| Obverse description | Facing bust of King Ratchis rendered in a crude, stylized manner characteristic of early medieval Lombard coinage, depicting a bearded figure with large frontal eyes and simplified facial features. The bust fills much of the coin's field, executed in low relief with a flat, schematic quality typical of hammered Germanic coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading DM RATCHIS SE RE NO RX, identifying the king by name and title. The lettering is irregularly spaced and somewhat crudely engraved, reflecting the provincial workshop style of the Castelseprio mint. The overall design shows a deliberate departure from classical Roman prototypes toward a distinctly Lombard artistic idiom. |
